Made in Italy
Too often and too carelessly these three magic words which have a precious meaning and which safeguard specific and important characteristics such as brilliance, high quality and style are used for certain products that actually are Italian for a very low percentage.
Made in Italy represents a geographical indication of a product which is totally invented, produced and packaged in Italy (Decreto Legge 25/09/2009, n.135); According to a research of the KPMG company, Made in Italy is the third brand in the world in terms of fame after Coca Cola™ and Visa™.
Therefore we can perfectly understand the reason why so many alternative, and also cheaper, methods are increasing in order to obtain this famous geographical indication certificate. Surely one of those methods is about producing the whole object abroad, in those countries where the labor is definitely lower if compared to Italy, and then bringing it back to Italy where a little modification will be made at an irrelevant price. This is how certain people consider and sell the “Made in Italy.
Not only it is something ethically questionable, this way products that are not 100% Italian are placed in our market and are sold as Made in Italy to customers. This could imply certain unpleasant consequences.
First of all the quality of the product often does not correspond and does not match its value more over prices are usually way higher than the actual costs of production; this happens especially in the sex sector. Plus there is also another aspect which must be totally protected: our health!
Dutch Greenpeace has published a report that says that plastic materials used to produce a wide range of sex toys contain a high percentage of phthalates which are dangerous chemical and toxic softeners used in PVC in order to make it soft and flexible.
Dutch Greepeance has also asked TNO, the researching company, to test eight different sex toys such as dildos and vibrators to check the percentage of phthalates. The result is pretty worrying: seven out of eight toys contain phthalates with a percentage from 24% to 51%. These chemical substances are not easily biodegradable and are considered dangerous even if they are present only in little quantities.
We have to underline the fact that these substances are present in sex toys which are used internally. The activist Toxic Bart Van Opzeeland sharply criticizes the use of that substance in toys for adults. Over the past few years many products of this sector have been tested but such high percentages have never been registered before.
The most recent research states that being in contact with it can influence the ability of our body in controlling the production of hormones and this could cause problems to our liver and our kidneys. Phthalates can even cause cancer.
